Career Fire Fighters Donate to Help Others
(Rockville, MD, Jan. 22, 2009)
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett accepted
a $1000 check from John Sparks, President of the Montgomery
County Career Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 1664, for the “Yes
Montgomery Can” effort today. The money, from the member’s
Welfare and Benefits Fund, will go into a fund to help needy
families and individuals in the County as they cope with economic
hardship.
“Everyone really needs to step up and
help those trying to make it in these difficult times,”
said John Sparks, MCCFFA President. “Some of our members
are struggling too, but felt it was important to help the
less fortunate. We urge other organizations and residents
to do what they can to help.” Local 1664 has a long
history of raising money for worthy causes, including its
annual “fill the boot” effort for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association.
Both Leggett and Andrews spoke at the kickoff
of the “Yes Montgomery Can” campaign earlier this
month. The campaign calls on residents and businesses to donate
food, money and to volunteer throughout the year to help others.
County Executive Leggett said, “I commend
MCCFFA and its members for what they do every day for Montgomery
County residents. Once again, MCCFFA has answered the call
and stepped forward to help those in need.”
Councilmember Phil Andrews chairs the Council’s
Public Safety Committee. Andrews said: "I applaud the
MCCFFA for recognizing that a growing number of people in
the County need help, and for stepping up to the challenge."
The Montgomery County Career Fire Fighters Association
represents more than 1000 fire fighter/paramedics employed
by the Montgomery County Government.
